Following glowing reviews, the Sunday Times has named the latest CD of Harrison Birtwistle’s music as the number one contemporary album of 2011. The Hallé’s recording of Night’s Blackbird, The Shadow of the Night and The Cry of Anubis, pieces that ‘could be by nobody else’, was joined in the “top 100” list by René Pape’s disc of Wagnerian scenes. Working with Daniel Barenboim and the Staatskapelle Berlin, Pape is hailed by the Sunday Times as ‘the most beautiful low voice singing Wagner today.’
