Harrison Birtwistle’s new work for piano and orchestra, Responses: Sweet disorder and the carefully careless, receives its world premiere in Munich on Friday 24th October, continuing his 80th birthday celebrations this year. The piece will be performed by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Stefan Asbury and soloist Pierre-Laurent Aimard.
In a recent interview with Jonathan Cross, Birtwistle explains how Responses grew from the Gabrieli-inspired In Broken Images (2011).
Further performances of Responses by co-commissioners include the Orquesta Sinfonica do Porto Casa da Música and Peter Eötvös (1 November), the London Philharmonic Orchestra (6 December) and Boston Symphony (12 February) both under Vladimir Jurowski, all with Aimard as soloist.
The LPO’s performance in December forms part of the Southbank Centre’s In Broken Images Birtwistle Festival (5th – 7th December), including a London Sinfonietta concert with In Broken Images, and Theseus Game conducted by Geoffrey Paterson.
