Following on from May’s major retrospective at the Barbican Centre, the BBC Proms will also feature several of Harrison Birtwistle’s important scores to celebrate the composer’s 80th birthday. His large-scale orchestral work Exody from 1997 will be performed on September 10 by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Andrew Litton, whilst Night’s Black Bird is performed at the start of the Proms by the BBC Philharmonic under their Chief Conductor Juanjo Mena on July 30. In between there are performances of Endless Parade by the Lapland Chamber Orchestra with John Storgårds (August 9) and a chamber prom dedicated to Birtwistle’s music which includes key-work Verses for Ensembles from 1969 by Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and Oliver Knussen.
Other Rayfield Allied artists who feature in this year’s proms include David Hill who will conduct the BBC Singers and Endymion in Steve Reich’s Desert Music in Prom 37 and Andrej Dunaev who joins Glyndebourne Festival Opera, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Robin Ticciati in Prom 6, Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss.
