Stephen Langridge and Alison Chitty create “timeless” Theodora

15 October 2015

Stephen Langridge’s production of Handel’s Theodora opened at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées this month, with designs by Alison Chitty. The duo have worked on several other productions together including Parsifal and Birtwistle’s Minotaur for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

The production was broadcast on Arte and can be seen in its entirety by clicking here.

The oratorio is the composer’s penultimate work. Stephen Langridge and Alison Chitty have created a “timeless yet terribly current” production (France TV Info.com).

French critics have praised their work:

“Stephen Langridge’s staging is one of finesse and has luminous simplicity.” - Hélène Kuttner, Artistik Rezo

“Stephen Langridge’s devised staging of Handel’s oratorio for Théâtre des Champs-Elysées is more meditative than explicitly descriptive… A fine and worthy production.” – Philippe Venturini, Les Echos

“Alison Chitty’s scenography is judicious and evocative” - Chantal Cazaux, L’Avant-Scène Opéra

“…ingenius minimalist scenes…” - Olivier Brunel, Concerto.net
