Composer and broadcaster Michael Berkeley has just returned from Wells Cathedral where he has been this year’s new music wells featured composer. The new music festival, which has been running since 2008, focuses on music written in the past forty years and is known for premiering works by internationally renowned composers. This year, Judith Bingham was its president.
The Cathedral School New Music Ensemble gave a performance on Wednesday 14 October featuring Michael’s Fierce Tears I, American Suite (flute and cello version), Persistent Memory and Seven.
The following day Michael gave a masterclass on four works by talented composition students at the Cathedral School and had his latest anthem, commissioned by the Cathedral itself and published by Oxford University Press, premiered at Evensong.
