Göteborg Opera’s new production of Idomeneo, featuring no less than three Rayfield Allied artists, has been very well received by audience and critics alike.
The new production by Graham Vick saw some exciting debuts with Laurence Cummings conducting his first staged Mozart production and tenor Luciano Botelho making his role debut as Idamante. Swedish bass Mats Almgren, soloist at Göteborg Opera, took on the role of The Oracle.
Critics praised the ‘organic conducting’ of ‘fantastic conductor Laurence Cummings’, and the ‘outstanding interpretation’ of Botelho’s Idamante.

‘The totally organic conducting of Laurence Cummings and the inspired playing of the Gothenburg Opera orchestra…brings out the seamless flow of Mozart’s writing’
Niklas Smith, Seen and Heard International
‘That such a space is created in the musical rendering can to a high degree be attributed to the fantastic conductor Laurence Cummings who again shows his aptitude with the living rhythm. An unbelievable presence appears in the storm scenes and orchestra sounds rush around with whirls and gusts’’
Magnus Haglund, Goteborgs-Posten
‘conductor Laurence Cummings, who also plays the fortepiano. He is a British expert on early music and has previously conducted a pair of baroque operas in Gothenburg and is now plunging into Mozart’s world. Rarely has the Gothenburg Opera Orchestra sounded so good. The score stands out crystal clear with vividness and depth’
Bo Löfvendahl, Svenska Dagbladet
‘the conductor Laurence Cummings and the Gothenburg Opera orchestra make the sea outside Crete swell through the score, with a light breeze as well as the howling storm. There are enjoyable choruses to be swept along by’
Gunilla Brodrej, Expressen
