Julia Jones has been appointed as General Music Director at Wuppertaler Bühnen und Sinfonieorchester. Following a unanimous vote of the selection committee and a very strong vote also from the orchestra, the British conductor will succeed current GMD Toshiyuki Kamioka this summer. She will conduct the orchestra both in the concert hall and in the opera house, where she will be in charge of two new productions per season.
Julia Jones has conducted the Sinfonieorchester on several occasions with great success. She previously held the post of Chief Conductor at Theater Basel and at Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon, and Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa. Much in demand internationally, Julia has shown a strong presence in Germany throughout her career, with early positions including Theater Ulm and Staatstheater Darmstadt. She regularly conducts at Oper Frankfurt and Semperoper Dresden, and has appeared at the Staatsopern in Berlin, Munich and Hamburg. Further afield, she has conducted at the Opéra National de Bordeaux, Grand Théâtre de Geneve, Den Norske Opera in Oslo, Opera Australia, as well as the Salzburg and Macerata Festivals and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. She works regularly at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where she will return in the 2017/18 season, and other upcoming plans include returns to Opéra national du Rhin, Volksoper Vienna, and her debut at Seattle Opera.
Her countless orchestra credits include Staatskapelle Dresden, Mozarteumsorchester Salzburg, Radiosinfonieorchester Wien, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra. She has just appeared with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg and this summer, she will conduct the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich at the Grafenegg Festival.
