We are thrilled that Katie Bray has been awarded the Dame Joan Sutherland Audience Prize at this year's BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition.
Katie was chosen to represent England at this prestigious event and competed against 19 other contestants from around the world. Viewers and the audience of the competition, who were clearly impressed by her polished and engaging performance, voted to present her with the Audience Prize at the live final on Saturday evening. This year the prize was dedicated to the memory of Dmitri Hvorostovsky, the much-missed baritone who won Cardiff Singer of the World in 1989.
"Few competitors attempted to create a coherent programme from the arias available to their voice types. The English mezzo-soprano Katie Bray managed it, saucy and breathless as Mozart's Cherubino, tender as Britten's Nancy, crazed with guilt as Handel's Dejanira, sultry and poised in Weill's Barbara Song." - Anna Picard, The Times
