Laura Bowler’s new work The Digger premieres on Wednesday 6 May 2020 as part of the London Sinfonietta’s Lockdown Live sessions. These concerts bring together bite-size pieces of newly commissioned music written for the London Sinfonietta’s principal players.
The Digger has been written for percussionist Joe Richards, who will play woodblocks, snare, floor tom, lentils and a variety of gardening tools, all accompanied by a pre-recorded tape part where short snippets from Samantha Schweblin’s short story The Digger are read by a disembodied computer voice. The work explores ideas of communication and story-telling, and the ease with which we can be persuaded of someone else’s truth, or, at other times, find ourselves in an endless communication cycle of crossed-wires.
Laura and Joe will also discuss the work and its composition as part of the concert.
The premiere can be watched live on the London Sinfonietta’s YouTube channel here and will also be available to view online afterwards.
