Traveler's Prayer: new Steve Reich piece premieres in Europe

14 October 2021

Steve Reich's newest work receives it's world premiere in Amsterdam this October. Entitled Traveler's Prayer it sets texts from Genesis, Exodus and Psalms, and uses Hebrew chant from America and Italy as well as a newly written melody for the text from Psalms, where no chanting tradition currently exists outside of Yemen.

The work is scored for 4 voices and 11 musicians and is premiered by the Colin Currie Group and long-time collaborators Synergy Vocals.

It will be the first major premiere of a new Steve Reich work since his collaboration with the visual artist Gerhard Richter opened the multi-disciplinary arts centre The Shed in New York City in spring 2019.

Premiere performances take place at the following commissioning venues:

Zaterdag Matinee at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam for Netherlands Radio on Oct 16 2021
Royal Festival Hall at the South Bank Centre London on Oct 19 2021
Elbphilharmonie Hamburg on Oct 26 2021
Philharmonie de Paris
on Nov 6 2021
Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall
on Jan 28 and 29 2022

The US premieres take place at Cal Performances and New York's Carnegie Hall in autumn 2022
