This winter So Percussion will tour their latest discs with Caroline Shaw, Narrow Sea and Let the Soil Play Its Simple Part, in a three date tour in Germany at Thuringer Bachwoche, Spain at the Palau de la Musica Barcelona, and the UK in a sold out Barbican Milton Court show.
The discs were released on Nonesuch in 2021 and became instant successes. Narrow Sea, a five-part song cycle setting texts from the Sacred Harp shape-note hymns, written for and performed by So Percussion, Dawn Upshaw and Gilbert Kalish, won Shaw a Grammy in 2022. The disc received international attention for the imaginative collaboration, rich and complex rhythms and textures, and inspired exploration of the American folk tradition. Among other accolades, BBC Music Magazine included it in their list of best classical albums released in 2021 so far, describing it as “exquisite”, “imaginative and expressive”.
It was followed by Let the Soil Play Its Simple Part, which features songs that Shaw and Sō Percussion developed over three days of studio time, experimenting with ideas that arose while recording Narrow Sea. Shaw and Sō Percussion have toured the discs live across the USA, and has been heard at the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, Norfolk and Norwich Festival, and Our Festival Finland for Let the Soil Play Its Simple Part's German, UK, and Finnish premieres.
