We are thrilled that pianist Sergio Tiempo made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic, performing Ginastera’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the orchestra and fellow countryman Gustavo Dudamel three times, from 11-13th May 2023. The final performance was also streamed live on the orchestra’s Digital Concert Hall platform.
The performance was well-reviewed, with Felix Stephan of Berliner Morgenpost praising Sergio's "percussive touch, frenzied precision, passionate dance and a seductive pianissimo...Tiempo has everything Ginastera's music needs" and Colins Column noting Sergio and Gustavo's synchronicity: "Tiempo gave a brilliant performance, from memory, with the Berliners and Dudamel every bit as vivid and rhythmically alert as the pianist". These performances mark the continuation of a collaboration between Sergio and Gustavo that has spanned many years. Sergio is a regular guest soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and together with Gustavo, in 2019 they premiered a brand new piano concerto ‘Universos Infinitos’ from composer Estaban Benzecry, a work that was dedicated to Tiempo himself by the composer. They gave multiple performances of the piece at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and also at the David Geffen Hall of New York’s Lincoln Center with the New York Philharmonic. It was reviewed as “a scintillating and virtuosic performance”, with “absolute commitment and an extraordinary range of touch”, “Tiempo somehow makes the impossible possible”.
Noted for his raw energy, musical versatility, and flair for the dramatic, Sergio made his professional debut at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw aged fourteen and has since collaborated with orchestras worldwide and performed sold out recitals at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London for the International Piano Series, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Wigmore Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie, and has appeared at the Martha Argerich Festival in Lugano each year, with recital partners including Mischa Maisky, Nelson Freire, and fellow pianist and sister Karin Lechner.
