Elizabeth Kenny: Artist in Focus

30 September 2024

This week’s #RAArtistinFocus is Elizabeth Kenny – one of Europe’s leading lute players. We last featured her in 2022, and this week find out even more about her and her current performances in our social media feeds.

Recently at the BBC Proms and Britten Pears Arts, Elizabeth, Nardus Williams and classicist Mary Beard engaged audiences with their programme 'Women's stories from the Ancient world', exploring women's voices in antiquity and their relevance today. Listen here:

Elizabeth's Linn CD with tenor Nicholas Mulroy and lutenist Toby Carr - ‘De Pasión Mortal’ – was released this summer, receiving high praise:
“[Liz & Toby] transcend stylistic categories to bring surprising colours, expressive textures and a wistful intimacy to the songs, whether solo or together.” (Gramophone)
“Kenny and Carr are most beguiling” (BBC Music Magazine*****)

Coming up on 13th October, Elizabeth alongside tenor James Way present their recital programme titled ‘Arcadia’ at Worcester College Chapel as part of the Oxford International Song Festival, immersing the audience in the sound world of French and English lute songs.

To finish the week of Elizabeth as Artist in Focus, here is a different side to our lutenist in her role at the Royal Academy of Music!
