Artist in Focus: Matthew Brook

23 April 2025

This week’s #RAArtistinFocus is Bass-baritone Matthew Brook, widely known for his engaging interpretations of Bach and Handel.

“Matthew Brook’s Jesus is an interpretation for the ages… It’s hard to imagine the part more sympathetically or beautifully sung.” (The Arts Desk*****)

This week find out more about his current performances in our social media feeds.

Matthew’s busy Passion season has included performances with RIAS Kammerkoor and Justin Doyle in Germany and Spain, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Nicholas Collon in Helsinki, and Philharmonie Zuidnederland and Jos van Veldhoven in The Netherlands.

Other repertoire this season includes Haydn’s Creation with the Hallé Orchestra and Mendelssohn’s Elijah at the Three Choirs Festival.

Matthew will be returning to work with director Robert Carson at Opéra de Rouen in 2026, after his success at Opéra national de Paris in 2023 performing the role of Il Re di Scozia in a new Carsen production of Ariodante under Harry Bicket. Watch his performance here.

Further ahead, Matthew joins the Concertgebouworkest for the St Matthew Passion as Christus with Klaus Mäkelä, and also the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra with Laurence Cummings, and he returns to Opera North for Handel’s Susanna to sing the role of Chelsias: https://www.operanorth.co.uk/whats-on/susanna/
