On the 28th of February 2025 James Way with Delphian Records released a CD of Britten's Canticles and Priaulx Rainier’s unaccompanied Cycle for Declamation for tenor. The disc has been widely reviewed and celebrated in the press:
[Way is] never less than eloquent, and blends wonderfully with the mezzo-soprano Lotte Betts-Dean as the voice of God in Abraham and Isaac...The most brilliant turn of all comes from Way alone, singing Priaulx Rainier’s starkly powerful Cycle for Declamation from 1954. A fascinating and rewarding release. - The Times
James Way’s instinctive understanding of this stimulating repertoire seems remarkably complete, and he displays a technical security, mellifluousness of timbre and range of tone-colour that excite admiration. - Andrew Achenbach, Gramophone Magazine
Way demonstrates exceptional control of phrasing and dynamics, particularly in the softer passages where his nuanced delivery creates moments of profound beauty. - Andrew Palmer, Yorkshire Times
Way's supple vocalism and sensitive phrasing make poetry from pieces which can seem austere, and whet one's appetite for more of Priaulx Rainier's music. - BBC Music Magazine
James along with Natalie Burch, Lotte Betts-Dean, Ross Ramgobin and Alis Huws perform Britten's Canticles as well as other pieces by Errollyn Wallen and Schubert at Milton Court on the 16th April 2025. Tickets here!
